Beyond the ordinary

"He's something of a living legend around these parts. Always gives his best, day in and day out, no doubt. It's a privilege to work alongside him and there's a sense of real gratitude for having him in your life in any capacity. Because although he's been and continues to be a phenomenal  teacher, he's first and foremost a genuinely good human being who emanates love and kindness in all he does."

Beyond the ordinary

My name is Mike Chenoweth and I am an Edmonton-based professional teacher of guitar, bass guitar, harmonica and ukulele. I am also a professional entertainer and perform regularly throughout Central Alberta.

My musical education includes studying music theory under Don Ross at Grant MacEwan University as well as Jazz guitar and advanced music theory with renowned educator Glenn Gray. I have studied bass guitar with John Towill at Alberta College, percussion with John McCormick of the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra and voice with esteemed instructors with Corinne Lillo and Jack Lumayor.

My depth of teaching experience includes thirteen years at Edmonton's Resonate Music School And Studio where I currently teach. Prior to that, I taught for five years at Edmonton Music Studios. I also currently offer private instruction as well as group lessons at North Edmonton Seniors Association. In the past, I have been hired to present a number of group-lesson sessions at Metro Continuing Education and Central Lions Seniors Centre, both located in Edmonton. I have also presented seminars and clinics at J. Percy Page High School and Victoria School Of The Arts, also in Edmonton.

Beyond the ordinary

My accomplishments include creating and building my own harmonica instruction course which I look forward to publishing in the near future. My experience on harmonica resulted in me performing three shows as a soloist with The Edmonton Symphony Orchestra at Edmonton's world-renowned Winspear Centre in January of 2025.

I have assisted a number of my students to successfully prepare for admission to the Grant MacEwan University Music Program. I have also coached many of my students towards performing on stage in larger scale productions to sold-out audiences at Festival Place Auditorium (capacity 400+) in Sherwood Park and the Myer Horowitz Auditorium (capacity 700+) in the University Of Alberta.

Beyond the ordinary

I possess first hand experience in instructing students of various levels on the Autism spectrum in a one-on-one setting. I also teach individual lessons on line, utilizing several platforms. Over my career, I have taught students of all ages and skill levels ranging from ages five to eighty-four. I am quite comfortable in helping anyone achieve their musical goals. My approach is very relaxed and I like to keep the mood light and fun during lessons.

Due to my prolonged teaching career, I have come to know that each student has a preferred method of learning that is as unique as they are. I believe the mark of a good teacher is in having the ability to utilize many different methods to introduce or explain any idea or concept. For these reasons, I can adapt and custom-tailor my lesson plans to suit each student based on my assessment of their skill level, goals, general knowledge and preferred method of learning. I am well-versed in the genres of Rock, Country, Metal, Pop, Funk, Folk (including Finger-Style), Blues, Rn'B and Ethnic music.

Whether you are an outright beginner of any age, you have a desire in learning to play campfire strummers, you are an established performer/songwriter or you need assistance in preparing for college or university, I have the highest confidence that I can help. Utilizing the depth of experience and knowledge I have gained over my many years in teaching students of all ages and skill levels, I'm excited to help you achieve your musical goals.
